portable portico

First we went on a site visit to the UCL quad: each student was asked to choose and take ownership of their own ‘patch’ of the classicistic Portico. Taken out of context, the 1 x 1m sized Portico Patch becomes a sited object of enquiry. On this site visit all students were familiarised with basic techniques of surveying and site sketching – learning about the importance of close observation. Not being interested in an immaculate state, the scuffs, bits of moss, weeds and chewing gum that might be part of the site become details not to be dismissed, but to be carefully mapped and documented. After discussing the key techniques of technical representation, the detailed site analysis formed the basis for scaled drawing in 1:5.
